Pineapple Beer: 4 Tasty Mexican Beverages

Tepache is a fermented drink made from the rinds of pineapples. It was traditionally sold by Mexican street vendors. The zesty and delicious drink has finally made its way over to the United States. It is quickly becoming a favorite at bars across the nation. It’s no surprise either (we definitely saw it coming). Tepache is all about bringing people together as a community and enjoying the simple pleasures of being a human. We need a lot more of that these days.

Speaking of things we need more of, let's talk about the bonus health benefits of tepache. Not only is this drink natural and low in sugar, but it is also a probiotic. Probiotics have a great many benefits for your health. Probiotics support overall immune health and gut health. As an added bonus, there are also prebiotic properties in tepache.

You can kick back and enjoy your tepache cocktail while feeding your gut flora in a healthy, happy way.

There Are No Rules for Tepache

The great thing about drinks that include pineapple beer or tepache is that there is no real right or wrong way to include it in the drink you’re making. This aligns with the spirit of tepache itself. Recipes for the brew vary among families and across regions. Each brings its own unique style and flavor and unique history. Go on a culinary adventure and fuse the modern take on drinks with the historical roots of tepache. That is the beauty of the brew.

Tepache can be consumed with joy on its own, or you can also combine the drink with other alcohol for a zesty probiotic buzz when you need one. You can even add a Mexican beer to a tepache brew and enjoy it in the streets, your backyard, or at the seaside. Like we said, you make the rules.

A Rich History and a Rich Future

Tepache has been through a thousand rounds of trial and error, learning and losing and loving, until it became the tasty treat it is now. Now you can add to that history by testing out and trying the drinks that include tepache. The drink was actually originally made with corn before brewers settled on pineapple. Who’s to say the next great iteration of tepache isn’t in one of these new and novel recipes?

Now that you have a better idea of where tepache comes from, we can get into the different drinks that use it. These concoctions recognize the power of the pineapple.

Check out these four different tasty beverages that include tepache:

1. Honey Rum Tepache

This drink, among many others using tepache, has been featured in many classic food magazines. It goes by several different names, including “O.D.A” (Official Drink of Austin).

The ingredients you will need are:

  • ¼ cup of honey simple syrup
  • 1 and ½ oz of tepache
  • ½ ounce of fresh lemon juice
  • 4 Thai basil leaves for garnish

You can adjust the alcohol intake measurements as you see fit. This recipe is a great start, but as we said, there are no rules when it comes to tepache.

Push the leaves to the bottom of your glass. Then add the rum and honey simple syrup. Pour the tepache over and then the lemon juice. You can add floater basil leaves as a garnish as well (We also wouldn’t say no to a little drink umbrella, either).

Kick back and enjoy! You have the opportunity here to make the tepache yourself, or you can buy it ready-made. Using different tepache flavors may even give your drink a fun extra edge that a plain tepache may miss out on.

2. El Coco

For another delicious beverage, look no further than El Coco. El Coco keeps the Mexican roots of tepache well watered. It includes tequila and coconut cream (Um, yes, please, you had us at tequila.).

Here are the ingredients you will need to create the Coco!

  • 1 ½ ounces of Blanco Tequila
  • 1 ½ ounces of tepache
  • ¾ ounces of cream of coconut
  • ½ ounce of yellow chartreuse
  • A few dashes of bitters

Combine the tequila, tepache, cream of coconut, and yellow chartreuse in a cocktail shaker. For this particular drink, it is best not to add ice to the shaker. Pour the drink into your glass and add a generous shake of bitters.

Yellow chartreuse isn’t for everyone. So, if this yellow doesn’t make you mellow, you can make this cocktail sans the yellow chartreuse and still have a tasty Mexican beverage that reaps the benefits of tepache.

Still thirsty? Keep reading.

3. Bourbon Tepache Booze

This drink adds a hearty Western flair to the traditional Mexican beverage. To make this bourbon beauty, the recipe is fairly simple.

The ingredients you will need are as follows:

  • 1 ½ ounces of bourbon
  • ¾ ounces of tepache
  • ½ ounce of lime juice
  • ¼ ounce Falernum
  • Orange peel
  • A dash of bitters

Get your cocktail shaker out again. You are going to combine the bourbon, tepache, lemon juice, and Falernum inside of it. For this cocktail, you will want the shaker full of ice. Now, friend, get shakin’. Embrace the tepache philosophy and pass the shaker among friends; that’s what it’s all about.

Pour the drink over crushed ice and garnish it with an orange peel twist. Ok, bartender, we see you! You are going to love this zesty, refreshing take on a classic drink. Tepache is perfect for reinventing a traditional drink and turning it into something entirely new.

4. Tepache and Beer, a Match Made in Heaven

This version of tepache is the most classic form of pineapple beer you’re going to find.

For this, all you’re going to need is:

  • 1 ½ oz tepache
  • Any Mexican beer of your choice

Simple as that! What you’re going to do here is up the alcohol content of the tepache you already have. So, grab your favorite Mexican beer from the fridge and simply add it to the tepache glass in your hand. Voila, you’ve got a tepache beer. This drink is excellent for a barbecue or a day spent chilling by the pool.

Adding the beer in after the tepache is brewed is a wonderful way to bring a little more booze to your beverage. You can also add the beer into the glass pitcher you are fermenting your own tepache in. Get creative and experiment with the flavors at your disposal.

Tepache Everything

No matter how you take your drink, tepache is an incredibly versatile beverage. You can add in just about any alcohol you’d like. Regardless, the results are going to be a refreshing and delicious drink. Tepache is the tasty Mexican beverage you can rely on.

That said, you can always just enjoy the tepache on its own. It stands its ground even without all the trappings of a master cocktail cart. Try out as many different flavors of tepache as you want without having to bust out the bitters with the magic of the internet, thanks to De La Calle!. Plan the perfect evening without even leaving your hammock (or couch).

No matter how you drink your tepache, the only thing that really matters is that you share it with a friend.
